Strictly speaking, we’ve never really had a democracy. A nation built on genocide and slavery, enlarged through colonial conquest, and fortified by non-stop military aggression is not a candidate for a healthy democracy. Our Constitution, undeservedly praised as the flower of American genius, has shown how easily and quickly it can be exploited by a pack of fascist zealots and money-grubbing oligarchs.
After 250 years, the empire is crumbling. The madness and corruption we are living through today is the logical consequence of a system designed from the start for the ease and convenience of Capitalists, slave-holders, and the privileged. We don’t need a reckoning, tweaks, reforms, a revival of civic virtue, or the restoration of social norms. What we need is a socialist revolution to tear this whole stinking, worm-eaten shack down and to build a true democracy on a solid footing of social and economic equality.
